Dear Friends,
We all want to be able praise others right? It makes people happy and connect you to more friends. Even reserved Japanese people cannot resist sweetened words and genuine acknowledgements.
皆様、本稿ではいくつか「輝き」や「閃く」に近い英語と日本語の言葉を紹介しますね。
「あっぱれ」
もちろん、お見事!すばらしい!すごいね!など、みなさまも言えると思いますが、「あっぱれ」という言葉も聞いたことがありますか?
It conveys the feeling of surprise and delight. So I believe it is more closely nuanced to sound like BRILLIANT! in English.
「Brilliant」の本来の意味とその英語
By the way, the literal meaning of “brilliance” is derived from “shining and radiating light.” なので、「燦然」(さんぜん)という言葉も知っておきたいですね。ダイヤ、太陽、舞台の光に使えます。すてきな輝きを描く美しい言葉です。
For Japanese speakers, you may want to use the below words to describe something this brightening and powerful.
★A diamond ring glitters on her finger.
★The wavy tides shimmers with light reflected from the radiating sunlight.
★Something sparkles vivaciously from his wrist. I think he bought a nice watch or something.
I believe many Japanese speakers also are familiar with the word “flicker,” which by the way, is more adequate to depict tiny and shaky, unstable movements of light. So there is a slight difference.
ちなみに、「燦然」のほかには、「燦爛(さんらん)」、「煌々(こうこう)」といったかなり高度の語彙もあります!
終わりに
燦爛は、華やかさや豪華さを強調する意図があることばかと思いますが、「煌々」はきらきらするイメージに近いですね。どちらも、小さなダイヤモンドより、大きな屋敷や建物、式典等の様子を説明するに適しますね。
These words brightened my day! How about you?
